Botswana Declares National Public Health Emergency Amidst Medicinal Shortage
Botswana's President Duma Boko

Botswana's President Duma Boko has declared a national public health emergency due to a severe shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies in hospitals and clinics across the country. The declaration came after the health ministry warned of stockouts due to unspecified financial constraints and postponed all non-urgent surgeries.

President Duma Boko made the announcement in a televised address on Monday, setting out a multimillion-dollar plan to rectify the supply chain involving military oversight.

Managing the shortages would be "highly price sensitive due to our limited coffers", he told the nation.

The medical supply chain failure has been attributed to inflated government purchasing prices ,

inefficient distribution systems, funding cuts and a prolonged slump in the global diamond market has reduced Botswana's revenue, impacting its ability to fund healthcare.

The shortage affects medicines for various conditions, including chronic diseases ,life-threatening conditions such as cancer, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS ,maternal and child health and basic medical supplies.

To address the emergency, the government has approved Emergency Funding worth $17.35 million to procure essential medicines and supplies whilst the military has been tasked to oversee an emergency distribution drive to prioritize remote and underserved areas.

Meanwhile, the UN children's agency, UNICEF, has called for "urgent action" to protect the health and future of every child in Botswana, highlighting the need for sustained support to address the crisis.
