Asantehene Destools Ohwim Chief Over Corruption, Illegal Mining

Manhyia, Kumasi, Ghana - 25 Feb, 2025 - Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has taken a significant step in upholding traditional authority and protecting the integrity of the Golden Stool by destooling the Chief of Ohwim, Nana Kusi Baaye II.
The decision was made after a thorough investigation and interrogation during a sitting of the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday, February 24, 2025 ¹.
Nana Kusi Baaye II, who served as Ohwimhene for 16 years, faced multiple allegations, including desecrating the Great Oath, extortion, illegal land sales, and engaging in illegal mining activities. The initial summons was over the reckless invocation of the Asantehene's Great Oath, but additional allegations emerged during the proceedings, including false testimony in a chieftaincy dispute.
What's striking is that his own family head and members of his royal family testified against him, accusing him of selling family lands under false pretenses and allocating them for illegal mining. Despite maintaining his innocence, Nana Kusi Baaye II was found guilty of the charges, leading to his destoolment.
This move by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II reaffirms his commitment to upholding traditional authority and protecting the integrity of the Golden Stool.
