Asante Kotoko Win 2025 President's Cup in Thrilling 2-1 Comeback Against Hearts of Oak
Accra, Ghana - 6 July, 2025 - Asante Kotoko has secured their ninth President's Cup title after a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The match, played in honor of Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama, saw Kotoko overcome a first-half deficit to claim the coveted trophy.
Hearts of Oak took the lead in the 27th minute when Hamza Issah capitalized on a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Camara, who fumbled a cross into the box. However, Kotoko responded strongly after the break, equalizing through a Peter Amidu Acquah cross that deflected off Konadu Yiadom into his own net. Just a minute later, Kwame Poku scored a simple finish after a square pass to give Kotoko the lead.
The Porcupine Warriors had opportunities to extend their lead, but Poku failed to connect with Albert Amoah's low cross in the 74th minute. Hearts of Oak also had a goal ruled out for offside and was awarded a penalty, which Emmanuel Amankwah took but Mohammed Camara saved.
Despite late chances to draw level, Hearts of Oak fluffed their lines, and Kotoko sealed the win, extending their unbeaten run against their arch-rivals. President Mahama presented the trophy to the winning side, congratulating them on their victory. This win marks Kotoko's ninth President's Cup title, solidifying their dominance in the competition.
With this victory, Asante Kotoko will participate in the Toyota Cup against Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa later this month, while Hearts of Oak will compete in the eight-team Eko International Tournament in Nigeria. The President's Cup is an annual fixture played in honor of Ghana's sitting president, and this year's match was significant as it marked another chapter in the intense rivalry between the two teams.
