Akufo-Addo calls for Vigilance Ahead of Dec 7 Elections
As Ghana stands on the cusp of its 2024 general elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged citizens to safeguard the nation's hard-won democratic values.
In a poignant address from Jubilee House on Friday Dec 6, the President underscored the significance of the impending elections as a crucial milestone in Ghana's democratic evolution.
According to him, Ghana's democratic journey has been marked by notable achievements, including a generational shift in attitudes towards elections. Younger Ghanaians now view voting as an integral part of civic life, reflecting a deeper understanding of democratic governance.
“Tomorrow, Saturday, 7th December, we head to the polls to elect a new President of the Republic and members of the ninth Parliament to steer the affairs of our nation,” he said.
“Democracy is not just the right to vote; it is the right to live in dignity,” the President stated, underscoring the broader significance of democratic governance. He added that Ghana’s consistent ability to hold peaceful elections has cemented its reputation as a beacon of stability on the African continent.
Quoting Thomas Jefferson, Akufo-Addo reminded citizens that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” emphasising the need to continually protect and nurture the country’s democratic flame.
The President's remarks come as Ghana prepares to elect a new president and members of the ninth Parliament. The election is poised to be a pivotal moment for the nation, with implications for Ghana's reputation as a beacon of stability on the African continent.
