Akufo-Addo approves upgrade of four districts and municipalities
Ghana's President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has given the green light for a significant upgrade of the country's local government structure.
The move, which follows a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, will see several districts elevated to municipalities and municipalities to metropolises.
As part of the overhaul, four municipalities - Ho, Sunyani, New Juaben, and Wa - will be upgraded to metropolises. Meanwhile, three districts - Offinso North, Brim North, and Karaga - will become municipalities.
The upgrades are in line with the relevant legal provisions outlined in Act 936, which governs local government structures in Ghana. The move is expected to bring about significant changes to the country's local government landscape, with implications for governance, development, and service delivery at the local level.
