Marwako Fast Food to appeal court’s ruling on food poisoning incident
Marwako Fast Food's management has rejected a court order to pay over GH₵1 million in damages for the 2022 food poisoning incident.
This sum is part of the relief awarded to three plaintiffs, who are siblings and victims of the June 2022 incident.
Each plaintiff was awarded GH₵345,000 in general damages.
Some victims in a JoyNews interview recounted their experiences from eating at the food joint two years ago.
I don’t even eat these salads again because I am scared of going through the predicament again,” one said.
However, the spokesperson for the food company, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, says they’ll appeal the decision.
“Marwako Fast Food Limited vehemently disagrees with the judgment. There is no factual or legal basis for the judgment and we’re still working around the clock, our lawyer and his team are scrutinising it and by Monday we should file to appeal whatever happened at the court,” he said.
Marwako Fast Food in May 2022 trended for several days on X (formerly Twitter) after several customers complained of being served contaminated food, resulting in food poisoning.
The complaints were triggered by a user, Edward Elohim, who posted about his illness after eating at the facility.
Marwako Fast Food after investigations by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), was found guilty of food poisoning.
The East Legon branch where the alleged food poisoning occurred was subsequently shut down by the FDA with the Authority providing corrective prevention actions (CAPA) for Marwako to implement.
