Hockey star, Elizabeth Opoku reclaims top honour at GOWA Awards
Accra, Ghana - Elizabeth Opoku, captain of the national female hockey team, Black Sticks Ladies, has been named Ghana's Outstanding Woman in Sports for the second time. Opoku received the honor at the seventh edition of the Ghana Outstanding Woman Awards (GOWA) held at the Wesley Towers in Accra.
Opoku's impressive achievements in the sport made her a standout candidate for the award. She led her team to gold at the Africa Games in Accra and secured victories for her club, GRA Ladies, in the 2024 Greater Accra Hockey League and the 2024 Fetu Afahye Competition in Cape Coast.
In an exclusive interview with GNA Sports, Opoku expressed gratitude to the organizers and promised to continue excelling in the sport. "I'm thankful for this recognition, and I assure my fans and the hockey fraternity that I'll keep doing my best," she said.
Opoku, a three-time Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Award winner, also acknowledged her mother's unwavering support and thanked God for her success. As a founding member of ChariCare, a non-governmental organization supporting underprivileged communities, Opoku remains committed to giving back.
