Gov't unveils 609-unit housing project for public servants
Accra, Ghana - September 30, 2024 - In a landmark move, the Ghanaian government has unveiled a comprehensive housing project aimed at providing 609 new homes for public servants.
Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, revealed the plan at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024, highlighting the government's commitment to enhancing the living conditions of public sector employees. The District Housing Programme will prioritize the needs of teachers, nurses, police officers, and other essential workers in rural and underserved areas.
The government is also reviving stalled housing initiatives nationwide. The Koforidua Affordable Housing Project will resume construction under the State Housing Company Limited, while negotiations are underway for a private sector takeover of the Saglemi Housing Project.
“These new housing units are part of our broader efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit, which is currently estimated at 1.8 million units,” Minister Nkrumah said.
“Decent housing enriches the lives of our public servants. It provides them with dignity and enables them to perform their duties effectively.”
“Our public servants deserve quality housing that fosters a conducive environment for their work and family life,” Minister Nkrumah said.
“The new homes will be constructed in various districts across the country, ensuring accessibility for those in rural areas.”
“This approach will allow for the completion and sale of the units without further government investment,” he explained.
To ensure sustainable financing, the government has partnered with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). This initiative addresses Ghana's estimated 1.8 million unit housing deficit, boosting public servants' productivity and well-being.
The Minister also emphasized the collaboration with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to secure sustainable financing for housing projects. “The GIIF will play a pivotal role in developing innovative financing models that will support our efforts to address the housing deficit,” he stated.
The project's scope includes 609 new homes, targeting rural and underserved areas, as part of efforts to tackle the country's significant housing deficit.
