Galamsey threatens power supply in Ashanti region, puts Konongo power grid at risk

Konongo, Ashanti Region - October 9, 2024 - A surge in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in Konongo, Ashanti Region, is posing a significant threat to power supply in parts of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions.

Illegal mining activities in Konongo, Ashanti Region, have reached alarming levels, putting the power supply in parts of Ashanti and Eastern Regions at risk.

The invaders have compromised critical infrastructure, including GRIDCO substation pylons, located within the Northern Ashanti Mines' concession.

The relentless galamsey operations have already damaged several pylons, threatening to disrupt power supply to Konongo Township and surrounding communities. Despite efforts by the mine's security task force, the illicit mining persists.

The mining company has expressed frustration over unsuccessful attempts to engage local security agencies, including Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC). A recent attack on the mining company's task force by armed individuals resulted in injuries and property damage.

In a disturbing turn of events, the mining company's task force was attacked by armed individuals, resulting in injuries and property damage. Intelligence suggests another assault on the mine and its employees is planned for Thursday, October 10.

Consequences

The ongoing galamsey activities not only threaten power supply but also:

- Compromise water quality: Previous studies have shown that galamsey activities can significantly impact raw water quality, as seen in the Konongo Water Treatment Plant.
- Undermine sustainability: The illegal mining menace undermines sustainability performance in the Ashanti Region.
- Disrupt mining operations: The situation poses a serious challenge to both mining operations and regional power supply.

In related news, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and GRIDCo have teamed up to boost power supply in the Ashanti Region, including upgrading the Obuasi and Konongo Substations.
