EC says NDC demonstration won't solve voter register issues, calls on Mahama to intervene
Accra, Ghana - The Electoral Commission (EC) has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for planning a nationwide demonstration over the voter's register, saying it will not lead to a credible register.
Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Samuel Tetteh, addressed a press briefing on Thursday, September 12, stating that the EC has repeatedly requested data from the NDC to support its claims of discrepancies, but none has been provided.
“The Commission strongly believes the surest way to attaining a credible and robust register is not through demonstrations. There is simply nothing to demonstrate about,” he stated.
The NDC has been vocal about alleged irregularities in the register, calling for an independent audit, which the EC has refused. The EC admitted to some illegal vote transfers by district officers, but claims to have corrected the issue and penalized those involved.
Despite this, the NDC is proceeding with a demonstration on September 17, backed by Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama. The EC urges the NDC to engage in discussions to resolve issues, warning that demonstrations will only create unnecessary tensions and suspicions.
“The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility of the 2024 voter's register is at the discussion table not on the streets. Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register," Tetteh insisted.
He further urged former president John Mahama, the NDC's flagbearer, to engage in constructive dialogue and bring his party to the negotiating table, ensuring a transparent and collaborative process to address their concerns.
“We are confident that the former president will heed our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the decision table," EC added.
