"Come out and speak to the nation. Set the tone for the elections " - Asiedu Nketiah calls out Akufo-Addo

The National Chairman of the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to reassure Ghanaians that he is ready to transfer over office peacefully at the end of the 2024 general election.

He made these pronouncements during the launch of the National Democratic Congress's election campaign in Tamale on Saturday,  July 27, 2024.

According to him, the President has a responsibility as the country's leader to ensure a smooth transition.

He stated that previous Presidents had expressed their preparedness to hand over power a year before elections, but President Nana Akufo-Addo had not done so, despite the fact that there were just four months till the election.

"Come out and speak as the father of the nation. Set the tone for the elections. If the election is going to be peaceful, it will be dependent on the President.”

He urged the President to direct his appointees to refrain from utilizing Ghanaians' invested power for selfish political gain.

Mr Aseidu Nketia, who defined his message as a letter to the President, stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo should remind his appointees that the strength of the population outweighs that of any police or military force.

He also encouraged the Council of State to fulfill its mandate, which was to advise the President, and to justify its existence.

Asiedu Nketiah also stated that traditional institutions were immune to partisan politics because they played an important role in maintaining peace by remaining neutral.

Hence, he advocated against chiefs and religious leaders engaging in political affairs and becoming party affiliates.

"When chiefs major in politics, politicians will major in chieftaincy, which we do not want" he said.

He pointed out that Ghana's ability to maintain peace was contingent on the 2024 general election and urged the National Peace Council to uphold its role.
