Akufo-Addo commends GAF, urges corporate support for Armwrestling

Accra, Ghana - October 20, 2024 - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) for its remarkable growth and achievements particularly in international competitions.

In a meeting with GAF officials, President Akufo-Addo commended the federation's tireless efforts, highlighting Ghana's success in international armwrestling competitions.

"Armwrestling has made tremendous strides in Ghana, and it's heartwarming to see our athletes excel internationally," President Akufo-Addo said. "The GAF deserves commendation for its tireless efforts especially for saving Ghana during the African Games."

The President highlighted Armwrestling's potential to promote healthy lifestyles, youth development, and national pride.

"Armwrestling embodies the values of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork," President Akufo-Addo emphasized. "It's essential we nurture this sport to benefit our youth and nation and i urge corporate and multinational institutions to support or partner Armwrestling through sponsorships of development programs and participation in competitions."
 
''I wholeheartedly commend the Charles Osei Asibey, an astute journalist with many portfolios and his board for study rise since 2016, armwrestling is traditional but I didn't know it was a sport we practice in Ghana until I started reading about it in the dailies". Nana Addo said.

The President urged corporate Ghana to support armwrestling through sponsorships and partnerships, recognizing the sport's potential to promote healthy lifestyles, youth development, and national pride.

"I appeal to corporate Ghana to join forces with the GAF because government alone cannot make it possible," President Akufo-Addo said. "Together, we can create a thriving Armwrestling ecosystem benefiting our youth, promoting healthy lifestyles, and showcasing Ghanaian excellence."

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also recognized Grace Minta's outstanding performance and ambassadorial role in Ghana's achievements, particularly in armwrestling. This acknowledgment is a testament to Minta's dedication and hard work in promoting Ghanaian excellence globally. 

GAF President Charles Osei Asibey thanked President Akufo-Addo for his endorsement, reaffirming the federation's goal to make armwrestling a household name in Ghana.

 "We're committed to encourage participation, developing grassroots talent and producing both continental and global champions." Osei Asibey said.

Ghana's Armwrestling Federation is making waves, thanks to the support of key institutions and government agencies. President Charles Osei Asibey expressed gratitude to SES Ghana, Kofikrom Pharmacy Limited, Twellium Industries, National Health Insurance Authority, Nguvu Mining Limited, Ghana Gas Company, and ABL Eagle Extra Stout, among others, for their investment in the sport.

This partnership has led to significant growth, with Ghanaian athletes excelling internationally, including Grace Minta's historic gold medal win at the 2024 World Armwrestling Championship.

Present at meeting were the Chief of Staff, Madam Frema Opare, Minister for Youth & Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, Mr. Ibrahim Adjei and other members of the office of the President, Pharm. Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Vice President for Ghana and Africa Armwrestling, DCOP Lydia Yaakor Donkor, Godfrey William Amarteifio and Husseini Addy all board members of GAF and some members of the Goldens Arms team.

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation has made significant strides since 2016, winning numerous medals and recognition internationally.

With presidential endorsement and support, the sport is poised for further growth and success.
