Akosombo dam spillage victims to receive new homes - Oppong Nkrumah
Accra, Ghana - The Ghanaian government has taken a significant step to support victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, announcing the construction of 1,000 housing units to provide relief to those affected.
Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, made this announcement at a press conference in Accra on September 30, highlighting the government's commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by displaced individuals.
“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 percent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units. We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2," he stated.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred in 2023, was a result of rising water levels due to heavy rainfall, forcing the Volta River Authority (VRA) to release water from the dam to prevent overflow.
Unfortunately, this led to flooding in low-lying communities along the Volta River, displacing approximately 35,857 people, including children, and destroying homes, farmlands, and properties.
In addition to the initial 1,000 housing units, the government has approved phase two of the project, which includes 1,010 more units. The necessary commencement certificate has been secured, and the government is finalizing the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition processes to begin construction.
