Accra and Cape Coast stadiums closed for maintenance

Accra, Ghana - The National Sports Authority (NSA) has embarked on urgent maintenance and upgrades at the Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

This move aims to bring the facilities up to international standards for upcoming matches, including the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Sudan in October.

The Confederation of African Football's (CAF) recent ban on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium due to its subpar pitch conditions prompted the NSA's swift action. CAF recommended a complete reconstruction of the playing surface, but the NSA is taking interim measures to secure an alternative venue.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to collaborate with CAF to inspect potential host stadiums.

The Accra Sports Stadium, listed in CAF's database, requires significant upgrades, while the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon may not meet the necessary standards.

Ghana Football Association officials expressed concerns about hosting matches abroad, citing national pride.

The Cape Coast Sports Stadium is currently the frontrunner to host the Sudan match, pending successful maintenance and upgrades.
