Millitary joins Police to Secure Disputed Constituencies as EC resumes re-collation of results
The National Election Security Task Force will deploy military personnel to support the police in maintaining security at collation centres. This move aims to prevent disruptions and ensure the smooth completion of the results collation for outstanding constituencies from the December 7 elections.
The decision comes after the Electoral Commission criticized the task force for inadequate security during the initial stages of the collation process. The commission noted that this lapse led to the abrupt suspension of the exercise.
ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, spokesperson for the election security task force, emphasized the importance of maintaining order at the collation centres. She cautioned political actors against inciting their supporters to converge on these locations, warning that such actions could escalate tensions and undermine the integrity of the process.
According to her, the joint police-military deployment is expected to provide a secure environment for the Electoral Commission to complete the collation exercise without further disruptions. She assured the commission of its readiness to provide the necessary security and has reminded the public that only accredited individuals will be allowed access to the collation centres.
“The Task Force assured the Electoral Commission of its readiness to provide the needed security for the outstanding collisions. In addition, the Commission reminded the Task Force that during the collation, only individuals accredited by the Commission should be allowed access to the collation centres. In this regard, there will be a joint police and military deployment for the exercise,'' she stated.
“We wish to caution the public that non-accredited persons will not be permitted at the centres. Also, the Task Force would like to urge the political parties to refrain from inciting their supporters to mass up at the coalition centres to disrupt the process,'' she added.
