Parliamentary Impasse: : Togbe Afede calls for impartial justice from judiciary
Accra, Ghana - Nov 18, 2024 - Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has expressed worry over the recent tensions between the Speaker of Parliament and the judiciary.
He criticized some judicial rulings as "illogical" and "uninspiring", emphasizing the need for a judiciary that protects freedoms and ensures fair justice delivery.
The traditional leader's comments follow former Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba's criticism of the Supreme Court panel's composition in a recent ruling. Atugba described the majority decision as "predictable."
Togbe Afede emphasized the need for a judiciary that protects freedoms and ensures fair justice delivery. "Recent happenings have given us cause for concern," he noted.
Togbe Afede XIV stressed that the judiciary should be impartial and ensure justice for all, regardless of political affiliations.
“It’s unfortunate that a former Supreme Court justice said the judiciary has become very predictable, it’s unfortunate. And some of the decisions that have been made by the judiciary have not been very inspiring.
“We want the judiciary that we all know exists to protect all of us, ensure freedoms, and ensure fair justice delivery. But happenings recently have given us cause for concern. Sometimes, in some ways the laws interpreted just defy logic,'' he stated.
His concerns reflect growing unease among Ghanaians about the potential impact of political tensions on the country's democratic institutions.
