Accra, Ghana - October 11, 2024 - Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences at the Vatican, has cautioned Ghana's institutions against becoming self-serving, emphasizing their primary responsibility is to serve the people.

Speaking at the 2024 IDEG Ghana Speaks High-Level Forum, Cardinal Turkson stressed that democracy's purpose is to promote human well-being and the common good, not to reduce citizens to servitude.

“Every social institution must serve the human person and not the other way round. So democracy as a system and a form of governance must serve the human person and not the human person reduced to serving democracy.”

“…If any human institutions will get to the point of reducing us into servitude, then it’s time we call for a change of that institution. Democracy or the form of governance is meant to serve us, promote our well-being, and our common good,” he stated.

Cardinal Turkson's remarks came under the theme "Advancing Peace, Unity, and National Cohesion in Ghana."

Cardinal Turkson, who has been a vocal advocate for social justice, stressed that democracy should promote the well-being and common good of citizens, rather than reducing them to servitude.
