Winneba Unveils Statue of Ofarnyi Kwegya, Ancient Ghanaian Fishing Hero

Winneba, Central Region, Ghana - 18 Feb, 2025 - A statue of Ofarnyi Kwegya, a legendary master fisherman from ancient Ghanaian history, has been unveiled in Winneba, a coastal town in the Central Region of Ghana.

According to oral traditional history, Ofarnyi Kwegya was a giant of a man who arrived in present-day Ghana from Ancient Egypt, alongside Asebu Amanfi and his group of people.

The legendary fisherman is said to have settled in Winneba, as well as other coastal areas, due to the abundance of stingrays in the rivers. His fishing exploits took him and his men to various parts of the Central Region's coast. The town of Moree, also known as Mɔrolɛ, is said to have been named after the stingrays that Ofarnyi Kwegya and his men used to catch.

The unveiling of the statue is seen as a celebration of Ghana's rich cultural heritage and the contributions of legendary figures like Ofarnyi Kwegya to the country's history and identity.
