Ghana's Electoral Commission destroys defective ballots for Eastern Region

In a move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Ghana's upcoming elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has overseen the destruction of defective ballot papers. The exercise, conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce, took place on Tuesday, December 3.

The decision to destroy the ballot papers follows the discovery of discrepancies in the serialisation process. To ensure transparency, the EC invited representatives from all political parties to witness the destruction process. The exercise was also monitored by constituency election directors from the various parties.

In an effort to prevent any potential issues during the elections, the EC has recalled the defective ballot papers for the Eastern and Western regions. A total of 31 constituencies, excluding Afram Plains North and South, presented their ballots for destruction.

The Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, John Appiah Baffour, expressed satisfaction with the exercise in an interview with Citi News.

“The exercise has been very successful. Actually, we brought all the parties together and the constituency executives of the NPP, NDC, and CPP, and all of them have been here. They checked the seals on the ballot paper bags, and they saw that everything was intact before we offloaded them and burned them. So it has been very successful.”
