Bawumia launches GoRide, Ghana's locally developed ride-hailing platform
Accra, Ghana - October 30, 2024 - Ghana has taken a significant step towards empowering its local taxi drivers with the launch of GoRide, the country's first locally developed ride-hailing mobile application. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially unveiled the app on October 30, 2024, in Accra.
GoRide is the result of a partnership between the government and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The app aims to provide fairer conditions and a sustainable alternative to international ride-hailing services, which have increasingly dominated the market. With a competitive commission of just 10%, GoRide enables drivers to retain more of their earnings, improving their financial stability and allowing them to support their families.
According to Dr. Bawumia, GoRide is part of a broader government strategy to empower local businesses.
“With a competitive commission of just 10%, our drivers are being empowered to retain their hard-earned money, allowing them to improve their financial stability and support their families.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that GoRide is part of a larger governmental strategy to empower local businesses. “This is about restoring dignity to our divers and ensuring that they thrive. This initiative reflects our government’s unwavering dedication to supporting local businesses and driving growth by keeping the profit generated by GoRide.
“Within our borders, we are conserving foreign exchange, fostering local wealth, and creating and enhancing our national economy. Every ride taken on GoRide contributes directly to Ghana’s economy, helping to build a sustainable forth for all of us,” he stated.
Economic Benefits
The app's launch is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana's economy. By promoting economic self-reliance and wealth retention, GoRide helps build a sustainable future for the country. With the app available on both Android and iOS, users can now enjoy convenience and accessibility in Ghana's transportation sector.
This initiative mirrors successful ride-hailing models in other countries, such as Indonesia's GoJek, which has improved the livelihoods of local motorcycle taxis and contributed significantly to the country's economy.
