Yvonne Chaka Chaka urges Akufo-Addo to take action against Galamsey, says it's time to 'walk the talk'
Accra, Ghana - October 4, 2024 - Legendary South African musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka has added her voice to the fight against galamsey, calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to enforce his promises to defeat the illicit mining activities.
Chaka Chaka, known as the "Princess of Africa," expressed concern over the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana's youth and environment.
In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on October 4, Chaka Chaka emphasized that galamsey is a burden not only in Ghana but also in South Africa.
She stressed the need for the government to tackle the issue head-on to restore Ghana's lost forest cover and destroyed lands.
Chaka Chaka, currently in Ghana for the African Legends Night, plans to formally appeal to President Akufo-Addo at the upcoming Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast.
She emphasized that young people are seeking solutions and urged the President to "walk the talk" and prioritize the fight against galamsey.
“We will have a Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast next week and President Akufo-Addo will be there and I will convey the message to him because we cannot afford to see young people suffering,'' she stated.
“Young people are saying the solutions are there and all we need now is to see him [President Akufo-Addo] walking the talk. We need him to practice what he is preaching so that these minerals can benefit everybody and everybody can get water to drink.
“When we say people shall govern, the very same people are the ones that come with the solutions so we need you to listen to the people of Ghana and do what is right,'' she added.
