Methodist Bishop urges NDC to sign Peace Pact
Accra, Ghana - The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, has added his voice to the National Peace Council's call for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider its decision not to sign the peace pact ahead of the December elections.
Emphasizing the importance of peace before, during, and after the elections, Dr. Boafo stressed that signing the peace pact is crucial for maintaining national stability.
The NDC's refusal to sign the pact has raised concerns, particularly after the party's nationwide demonstration on September 17 against the Electoral Commission's decision not to allow a forensic audit of the voter's register.
Speaking on JoyNews, Dr Boafo said, "We join arms with the Peace Council to implore, or ask, the NDC to reconsider their stance because all we are aiming for, come December—before, during, and after—is peace. So, if the major political party that should contribute to this peace process says they will not sign, it becomes a matter of concern."
"It calls for all of us to sit down and find ways to safeguard our democracy and peace and to strengthen it as we have seen over time. So, it is something concerning, and we are all asking the NDC to reconsider their position so that we can move away from the heightened tension we are currently facing," he added.
The NDC has however, stated that it will only consider signing the peace pact if certain conditions are met, sparking worries about the potential impact on the election's peaceful conduct.
