'Fix the Country' Activist arrested at Kotoka Airport
Accra, Ghana - A member of the Fix the Country movement, Ralph St. Williams, was arrested at Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, September 19, sparking outrage from the group.
According to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of the movement, Williams was detained while en route to Kumasi for a protest scheduled for Saturday.
Barker-Vormawor linked the arrest to Williams' participation in the National Democratic Congress's "Enough is Enough" demonstration against the Electoral Commission.
A viral video showed Williams tearing down posters at the National Cathedral project site, expressing anger over alleged misuse of public funds.
Barker-Vormawor alleged on X that the arrest aimed to prevent Williams from joining the upcoming "Say No to Galamsey" protest and intimidate activists advocating for transparency and environmental justice.
“It appears that Ralph's arrest stems from his peaceful participation in Tuesday’s 'Enough is Enough' demonstration, where he highlighted government mismanagement by opening the National Cathedral pit, a site that has already cost Ghana 58 million cedis, for symbolic swimming,” portions of the tweet read.
The movement has condemned the arrest, demanding Williams' immediate release and an official apology.
According to Barker-Vormawor, a formal petition will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police to address the situation.
