Accra, Ghana - November 1, 2024  - The National Media Commission (NMC) has sounded a warning to Ghana's media outlets, threatening penalties for those broadcasting explicit or harmful content.

NMC Chairman Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo expressed concerns over the programming choices of numerous radio and TV stations during a regulatory meeting on October 31. The commission received approximately 9,000 complaints this year, citing issues such as:

- Sexual content
- Money laundering
- Loan fraud

Over 40 media organizations were implicated, with Oyerepa TV singled out for airing explicit material.

However, Oyerepa TV's management expressed disappointment at being singled out, while the NMC defended its actions, stating that the level of obscenity broadcast posed significant harm.

NMC Takes Action

The NMC defended its actions, stating that Oyerepa TV's content posed significant harm. The commission may refer the matter to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to consider revoking the station's license.

GJA Criticizes NCA

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) criticized the NCA for lacking a clear digital migration roadmap, questioning its commitment to upholding broadcasting standards.

NCA's Assurance

The NCA responded, assuring the public of its proactive role in monitoring and regulating the sector.
