We have not licensed any betting company - Kurt Okraku
Accra, Ghana - President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has announced plans to take decisive action against betting companies that have been illegally featuring Ghana Premier League matches on their platforms.
Speaking at the GFA's 30th Ordinary Congress, Okraku revealed that the association's legal team will engage with betting companies to halt this practice, as no bookmaker has been licensed to do so.
The move comes amidst growing concerns over match-fixing allegations that have plagued the league in recent times.
The most notable scandal involved AshantiGold and Inter Allies in the 2020/21 season, which led to a tarnished reputation for the sport.
"We have not licensed any betting company to take odds on our games. We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football," he said
"It is time to say no to such companies. We are open to doing it the legal way. We will invite companies who want to partner with us to speak to us."
Okraku's administration has been marred by a series of match-fixing allegations, prompting the need for swift action.
The GFA president emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the game and ensuring that all stakeholders operate within the bounds of the law.
The GFA's efforts to regulate betting operations in the league aim to prevent further damage to the sport's reputation and maintain fair play.
With the legal team set to engage with betting companies, a crackdown on unlicensed operations is imminent.
