Voter register is sick, cannot be used for any purpose- NDC
Accra, Ghana - The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that the current voter register is unfit for use in the upcoming December 7 polls, citing widespread errors and irregularities.
Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT, revealed that the register is plagued by mistakes, rendering it unreliable for the elections.
In a letter to the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, August 27, the NDC requested an emergency meeting to address the discrepancies found in the provisional register provided to political parties during the exhibition exercise.
"There is more to it than what we are thinking. In fact, the register, as we speak now, is completely sick. It cannot be used for any purpose whatsoever, because you can have some consequences where you have the data completely quadrupled," stated.
“There is no polling station that is going to have more than 700 [voters]. But you can have a polling station where you have a register reporting a transfer of more than 1,000 [voters]. It doesn’t make sense. There is something wrong with it [the voters’ register],"he added.
The EC is yet to respond to the NDC's demands, but the development has sparked concerns about the commission's preparedness to deliver a hitch-free elelection.
