Swift action needed on Lithium agreement - Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Accra, Ghana - Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has sounded the alarm on the urgent need for Ghana to pass its lithium agreement, warning that delays could lead to the country's lithium assets becoming stranded.

Speaking at a parliamentary session on Tuesday,September 3, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the finite nature of lithium resources and the rapidly increasing global demand for the mineral.

He cautioned that Ghana's window of opportunity to capitalize on its lithium deposits may be shorter than anticipated.

The Suame MP's warning comes as the world shifts towards electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, making lithium a highly sought-after resource. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's call to action urges lawmakers to expedite the agreement's passage to prevent Ghana from missing out on this critical opportunity.

“We must declare in our minds that if we don’t take action, we may experience stranded assets in the not-too-distant future. As far as lithium is concerned, we should not think that it is an eternal resource.

“What is happening now, pretty soon, if we are not careful, it may fall into the category of stranded assets. That is not to say that we should not approach it with some degree of caution,'' he said.
