MOMAG warns of nationwide Mobile Money shutdown over Galamsey
Accra, Ghana - The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a stern warning to the government, urging it to take decisive action against illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, or face a nationwide strike.
On Channel One TV's 'I Stand Against Galamsey' campaign on Monday, September 16, MOMAG representatives expressed their deep concerns about the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment.
The group accused the government of inaction and threatened to halt operations nationwide by the end of September if the situation does not improve.
Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary of MOMAG, emphasized the potential impact of such a strike, urging the government to take immediate and effective measures to address the crisis.
“In light of the government’s inaction, MOMAG is left with no choice but to consider a nationwide strike and this strike will impact momo transactions, bill payments, salary payments, and financial inclusion will also be affected," he said.
MOMAG has reiterated its call to the government to take swift and decisive action by:
- Declaring a state of emergency to protect all water bodies from the devastating effects of galamsey
- Revoking all mining leases that encroach on water bodies
- Strictly enforcing existing laws and regulations to curb illegal mining activities
- Offering alternative livelihood opportunities to those engaged in illegal mining, to help them transition to more sustainable and legal means of earning a living.
The strike would affect mobile money services across the country, potentially disrupting financial transactions and economic activities.
