Korle Bu denies claims of 20 renal patient deaths

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has flatly rejected recent media accusations regarding the deaths of 20 renal patients and outstanding debts to suppliers.

In a statement made on Tuesday, hospital administration denied two claims: i. that 20 patients died as a result of a lack of renal dialysis consumables, and ii. that these shortages were caused by the facility's alleged debt to suppliers.

KBTH emphatically disputed these charges, noting that there is no reality to the assertion that 20 renal patients died this year as a result of a dialysis consumables shortage.

“We have no record of any deaths during the period of shortages at the Renal Dialysis Unit,” the statement read.

The charges sprang from a misinterpretation of a media brochure and sensationalized Facebook comment.

In response to the second complaint, the hospital stated that the Ministry of Health had settled all outstanding debts to suppliers.

“Currently, Korle Bu does not owe GH¢6 million to the supplier as being falsely alleged,” the statement emphasised.
