He cannot rewrite history- Mahama jabs Akufo-Addo over Nkrumah comment

Ghana's former President, John Dramani Mahama has slamed President Akufo-Addo for his Founder's Day speech he made over the weekend.

The President stated in his speech to the nation on August 3 that Dr Kwame Nkrumah should not be solely creditied for Ghana's independence.

"While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge for ourselves that respect that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations" the president remarked.

Mr Mahama responded by stating that Ghana's past is already well-known hence, the president cannot rewrite history.

"We all know the history and will follow our history. When we are elected, as president I promise you, we will reset all," he said .

"The very people who opposed our independence then, and even went ahead to petition the Queen of England. The UGCC members Akufo-Addo is a member of were opposed to Ghana being an independent state. So, he can't come and rewrite history," the former president stated.

In 2019, Ghana's Parliament enacted a law, designating August 4 as Founders' Day to commemorate the achievements of all who contributed to the country's fight for independence.

This law also designated September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, which recognizes Nkrumah's efforts.

The decision to create Founders' Day however, generated complaints from several individuals and groups who believed in Nkrumah's unique role in founding the country.

These critics contend that Nkrumah's leadership was vital and deserves sole credit.
