Ghanaians spoke resoundingly in giving a huge mandate to the NDC led by President John Mahama in the 2024 General Elections. In Parliament, the NPP was also nearly decimated in a manner that many level headed scholars who are not stomach-directed in their research and analysis had predicted.
The embarrassing nature of the NPP defeat is unprecedented and speaks to the revulsion of the Ghanaian people about how low Mr Akufo Addo sunk Ghana in terms of governance. When the good people of Ghana complained about hardships and difficulties, they were gaslighted into believing that all was well in a manner that incurred their wrath.
Governing a country well is not about surrounding yourself with people you can bully and listening to their praise singing. But unfortunately Mr Akufo Addo didn’t know this. He chose to ignore constructive criticisms, public outcry and pandered to the praises of people who were paid to tell him all was well and those who were hired to insult people whose sandal laces they were unqualified to untie.
Well, Ghanaians have spoken and I would chronicle the factors that accounted for this monumental NPP defeat in a journal article shortly. They can read to aid them rebuild their party. But for now, the NDC is the most attractive political party in Ghana and given that we aren’t a one party state, I call on the OWNERS of the NPP to resurge the competitiveness of the party by dealing with their own political suicide of making just one man, Mr Akufo Addo more powerful than the political party. Let them rescue the soul of the party from the grip of Mr Akufo Addo and his remnants, for the purposes of rebuilding and restoring the party to its great tradition.
In doing this, none of the current leadership of the party must have a role to play because, they never had the courage to stand up against the destruction of the party by Mr Akufo Addo. This is a free counsel to the OWNERS of the party. Let them not think about criticizing the new administration for now, because in our analysis and in the judgment of Ghanaians, they are clueless when it comes to governing a country. Let them therefore focus on rebuilding their party and allow civil society to keep the new NDC government on its toes.
The NPP must only come out to speak and offer a critique of the new government after they’ve been successful in rebuilding their party and selected a new crop of leadership (in line with the democratic ethos of their tradition) who would quickly appreciate the party’s bad governance in power, and would have drastically new set of ideas about how to handle the mandate of people who yearn for their lots to be improved.
Dear OWNERS of NPP, do these, else, should the NDC handle the mandate given them by Ghanaians well and even slightly better than how Mr Akufo Addo did, your party would remain in opposition for long and this may not be good for Ghana’s democracy. The party can learn in humility or choose to continue on the arrogant tangent that has brought it to its knees even when it wallows in opposition. Good luck!
To President Mahama, I say congratulations to you for this victory. Let the huge mandate humble you and do your best for Ghanaians. It is not going to be easy and things may not change immediately but one thing you can do to carry all on board and to restore the decimated hope and confidence in the political elite, is to go back to the NDC’s ideals of probity and accountability.
Let every money stolen be recovered; let every state land and state property “legally” or illegally acquired be given back to the state; let every fraudulent deal that made the state lose money be interrogated and let those who must face the law be made to do so. I wish you well.
