GUM promises to reduce parliamentary seats from 275 to 40 if they win the presidency

Accra, Ghana - Nov 10, 2024 - The Ghana Union Movement (GUM) has unveiled a bold plan to reform Ghana's legislative structure, seeking to reduce the number of Members of Parliament from 275 to approximately 40.

This proposal aims to streamline governance, enhance legislative efficiency, and alleviate the financial burden on Ghana's resources.

Key Reasons Behind the Proposal

- The high number of MPs contributes to inefficiencies and gridlock within Parliament
- Prolonged discussions and divided opinions delay important resolutions
- Maintaining a large assembly is costly, with expenses including salaries, benefits, and resources for each MP's office

Christian Kwabena Andrews, GUM's flagbearer, emphasized that a smaller, more focused legislative body would drive policy changes, reduce partisan gridlock, and prioritize Ghanaian citizens' interests. Andrews, known for advocating social and economic justice, positions GUM as a proponent of change challenging the status quo.

GUM's Background

Founded on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's ideological principles, GUM entered the national election race for the first time in 2020. Despite being a newcomer, GUM received 105,548 valid votes (0.08% of total ballots cast) and secured third position behind the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).
