Ghana's Parliament Passes Landmark Environmental Protection Bill
Accra, Ghana - 2 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Parliament has made a groundbreaking move in the fight against environmental degradation, passing the landmark Environmental Protection Bill. This pivotal legislation is poised to transform the nation's approach to environmental conservation, tackling pressing issues and promoting sustainable development.
The bill's passage marks a significant milestone in Ghana's commitment to protecting its natural resources. After months of deliberation, lawmakers from both sides of the political divide came together to support the legislation, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the environment for future generations.
Key provisions of the bill include stricter regulations on industrial emissions, waste management, and deforestation. Additionally, it outlines measures to promote renewable energy sources and encourage eco-friendly practices among businesses and individuals.
In today's parliamentary session, 2nd Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah announced the successful passage of the Environmental Protection Bill 2024, stating; ''Hon. members, the Environmental Protection Bill 2024 is now read for the third time and passed''.
The Environmental Protection Bill consolidates existing laws, establishes new institutions, and introduces stricter environmental regulations to address pressing challenges like climate change and waste management. A notable feature of the bill is the establishment of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which will regulate, protect, and oversee environmental matters, including climate change responses.
With the passage of this bill, Ghana is set to make significant strides in protecting its natural resources and promoting a sustainable future. The legislation awaits presidential assent to become law, after which the EPA will be empowered to enforce the new regulations and oversee Ghana's environmental policies.
