Rock explosion kills three, Injures dozens in Buduburam
Buduburam, Ghana - October 14, 2024 - A devastating incident occurred on the Buduburam stretch of the Accra-Winneba highway when a rock blasted by a construction company caused widespread destruction, resulting in three fatalities and over 30 injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the rock blast, which lasted several minutes, was conducted after traffic was halted. However, residents claim this is not an isolated incident, as previous blasts have damaged roofing sheets in the Big Apple area.
In the aftermath, enraged residents attacked workers of the construction company, leading to the arrest of a Chinese team leader.
The injured were taken to St. Gregory Hospital in Buduburam, where Hospital Administrator Mattias Ayegre-Anaba confirmed that 42 people were treated. Four are being referred to other hospitals, while 18 females, nine males, and two patients in recovery are in stable condition. Three have been discharged.
The Hospital administrator at the St. Gregory Hospital, Buduram, Mattias Ayegre-Anaba noted that “This is the true records of what we have in this hospital. In all 42 people were brought here. As we are speaking, we are referring four, two have already gone to 37 Military Hospital and the two we are waiting for an ambulance to be taken to Winneba.”
“Currently these people on admission are in stable condition. We have 18 females; nine males and we have two others in our recovery. Three were okay and have been discharged. Unfortunately we lost three.”
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with concerns raised about the construction company's safety protocols.
