AG orders EPA to revoke L.I. 2462

Accra, Ghana - October 11, 2024 -  In response to mounting pressure from organized labor and the public, the Attorney General (AG) has directed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462.

This law currently allows mining in forest reserves, contributing to widespread environmental degradation.

The move marks a significant step in the government's efforts to tackle the devastating impact of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

Mining in forest reserves has destroyed ecosystems, polluted water bodies, and caused long-term damage to natural resources.

The EPA will now present the Instrument to Parliament, which will make the final decision on repealing the law, effectively banning mining in forest reserves and aligning with the government's environmental conservation objectives.
