CAF revokes Baba Yara stadium approval, says GFA must find alternative venue
Accra, Ghana - September 11, 2024 - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn its approval of the Baba Yara Stadium as a venue for Ghana's home games, citing failure to meet required standards.
This decision comes after the stadium was conditionally approved to host Ghana's opening 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Angola on September 5.
CAF's revised decision follows observations from the Black Stars' match against Angola, where concerns about the playing field's condition were raised.
A letter from CAF highlighted earlier expressed concerns about the stadium's suitability for Category 3 international matches.
"It is important to note that, prior to the match, CAF had expressed concerns about the suitability of Baba Yara Sports Stadium for hosting top-tier international fixtures. Persistent issues at this venue, as well as others in Ghana, such as Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, have also been noted,'' the statemet read.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) must now find an alternative venue for Ghana's next home game against Sudan on October 11, as the Baba Yara Stadium no longer meets CAF's requirements.
