Deceived and Deployed: 14 Ghanaian men forced to fight in Ukraine
The situation in Donetsk, Ukraine, is dire for 14 Ghanaian men who were deceived into fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine.
They were promised menial jobs in Russia but found themselves on the frontlines, facing unimaginable danger.
One of the men shared his heartbreaking story to TV3 News' Godwin Asediba, describing his deteriorating health and the fear that grips him every day. He's regularly injected with substances to keep him fighting, but he's losing hope.
“I don’t know how much longer I can hold on. I just want to go home,” he said in a weak, trembling voice.
According to him, he stares at the sky, hoping for deliverance, yet dreading that he might become the next casualty, crushed by a rebel attack or lost to the brutality of war.
“I don’t know if I’ll survive another day,” he whispered to the reporter.
The families of these men gathered at the Ghana Police Headquarters on September 20, 2024, seeking answers from Abraham Boakye, the man accused of sending their loved ones to Russia under false pretenses.
However, they were met with disappointment when they learned Boakye had fled back to Russia.
Gideon Sarfo, the nephew of one of the trapped men, expressed his anger and frustration, saying, “We’ve been waiting for answers, but all we get are closed doors and broken promises. My uncle’s life is at stake, and no one seems to care.”
Meanwhile, Security analyst Adib Saani, warns that this situation poses a significant threat to Ghana's security, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
“If no immediate action is taken, this could escalate into a larger security threat,” he said gravely.
With over 70,000 volunteers already dead in Ukraine, including many civilians forced to join the war, time is running out for these Ghanaian men.
And outside Abraham Boakye's shuttered office, the weight of unspoken truths hangs heavy, repeated fruitless visits from the media leaving only questions and disappointment.
